I recently purchased an Insignia 27″ television when I moved in to my new apartment. Okay, honestly, my mother bought it for me as a housewarming gift, but “someone” still purchased it, right?

When I first brought the television home and turned it on, I was thrilled, because for the last ten years, I'd had a 19″ set with a picture that was too dark, no matter what I did to adjust it. Having such a big screen and such bright color was so exciting to me.

Unfortunately, within an hour of having the television on, it began to make a high pitched ringing noise that would not stop unless I turned it off and left it off for several hours. Because of the size of the television, and the fact that Best Buy would not pick it up for me without a charge, I dealt with the awful sound for two days hoping it would go away with some use. But, the noise continued any time the television was on for more than an hour.

We did finally exchange it for a new television, and I went with the same one so that I would not have to pay a higher price. The one I have now is great, so the ringing must have been an isolated incident. I have a bad habit of leaving my television on continuously, and I have never again heard the ringing sound, even after the TV has been on all day and night.

For my purposes, the Insignia is perfect. The picture is crystal clear and crisp, the color is bright and rich, and the sound is clear and distinct. The television serves every purpose that I had in mind for it, and most importantly, it is easy to figure out how to hook up other devices to it. I easily managed to hook up both the dvd player and the digital cable box without incident, and for someone as technically challenged as me, that's saying something.

I think, other than the issue with the first television, the only real negative thing I have to say is not about the TV itself, but about the local Best Buy that I purchased it from.

Insignia is Best Buy's brand of electronics, so you can't buy it anywhere else, and I have never had good luck with service at Best Buy. I always get a good price, which is why I keep going back, but the customer service leaves much to be desired.

When I called the store to tell them about the problem with the first television, they were not helpful and took no responsibility. The store is literally five minutes away from my house, yet they would not waive or even reduce the delivery fee. I live alone and am not a big person and had no other way of getting the television back to the store and then the new one back to my house except for them to pick up and deliver. So, not only did I have a defective television set, but I had to pay an extra $50 to get the new one. But, it all did worked out in the end, and I am very happy with my purchase.

This is not an HDTV or a flat screen, so likely it will not appeal to the more technically savvy or someone looking for an addition to a home theater, but for someone who just wants a nice sized television with a good picture and good sound, I recommend it.

Cost – $189 + tax

For fun handmade gifts I like to press flowers and arrange them in pictures. This beautiful craft brings a touch of nature indoors. When I give the framed pictures as gifts I feel I am sharing a little bit of my garden and the joy it brings me.

First, I pick flowers, leaves, and stems at the peak of bloom. Look not only in your flower garden but beyond to the vegetable patch, yard, ditches, ponds or anywhere plants grow. Look carefully at the plant material and choose only that which is free from blemishes and bug holes. Finding what presses well is a matter of trial and error. I have had good luck with Verbena, petunia, Johnny-Jump-Up, ferns, Begonia leaves, and the curly ends of melon vines.

Next, lay the flowers and leaves flat between layers of facial tissue, being careful the plant materials don't touch each other. I press whole flowers as well as individual petals. Layer the tissues in a heavy book, separating layers between a thick layer of pages. Old phone books work well or any heavy book. I was lucky enough to find a bunch of old college textbooks at a garage sale which I use. Stack more books on top for added weight. Drying times vary but most flowers are pressed and dry in a week or two.

Now the fun begins! Arrange your flowers on heavy paper. Experiment to find a design of pressed flowers which is pleasing to you. The dried flowers can be arranged in a heart, made into butterflies, girls with frilly dresses or in a more natural free-form design. I use a toothpick to help move the delicate materials around. Use a paint brush to paint on clear drying non-acidic craft glue to fasten down the design and over the top to seal.

The pressed flowers can be used to decorate any number of items. Bookmarks made by laminating the sealed dried flowers on a narrow strip of paper and adding a tassel make wonderful gifts for teachers. Special vacation mementos can be made by surrounding photos with ferns picked at the campground. You can make place mats or magnificent natural art to adorn your walls; the possibilities are limitless.

These crafts could conceivably last a life time if cared for properly. I have many pressed flower items which are over ten years old. To preserve the delicate colors keep the art out of direct sunlight or bright light. Give it a try, you just might find yourself a new hobby.

SXSW - Quarterlife: A Wild Journey From Internet to TV by hustler of culture

Ethical, legal, and regulatory issues for the most part do not differ on a Business to Consumer (B2C) web site compared to a Business to Business (B2B) site. If a customer, whether they are a business or Joe Average consumer, is a victim of false advertising, leaking of confidential information or a scam, the harm done will result in lost customers and potential future revenue. Regulations vary from state to state, and are becoming more common in today’s online world.

Ethics in business are important toward establishing a good rapport with clients. Internet surfers often receive pop-up banners from promotions businesses who are promoting other companies through their websites. These promoters often promise a big ticket item such as a free laptop or plasma television simply for registering on their site and selecting for example three vendors to “try out.” It is a scam because what they require is that the customer sign up for a magazine subscription or open up a retirement savings account, and then never come through in sending the free item to the consumer. Their promise is that when the consumer has paid for the magazine subscription or opened up the account, it is only then that they will qualify for the free item. This is done entirely online and there is rarely a traceable name of the company who is tied to the website. There is also no contact provided for the consumer to find out when they will receive their free item or to complain; thus it is a scam.

Although most consumers will agree that it is unethical to trick a consumer into thinking they will receive a free computer simply for trying out a sponsor’s product, many still are tempted by the offer and continue to fall victim. The customer most likely will get the subscription advertised, but it’s unlikely that they would have sought the subscription without the offer of a freebie. Consumers will likely also be inundated with similar scam offers in their email inbox. Companies involved initially have only the intention of creating new business, yet they risk losing these highly sought after customers when said customer refuses to renew the magazine subscription since they relate that company to the scam site.

Another example of how B2B and B2C sites will lose customers and potentially be sued is if confidential information about the customer is broadcast or sold to another company or party. Confidentiality should be key when dealing with businesses online as well as in the brick-and-mortar world. There should not be any difference. Businesses are expected to act professionally at all times and should value client's privacy on all matters they deal with.

Violation of confidentiality has recently been a major issue online with credit card holders falling victim to the release of confidential information such as social security numbers. A consumer should feel comfortable when providing a credit card number online to make a purchase. A statement advising a “Verisign” secured site or some other type of security should be in place on any site where payments are accepted.

Amazon.com provides the following statement on its site;

“Amazon.com knows that you care how information about you is used and shared. Click the “Privacy & Security” links on this page for more information about your privacy and credit card safety.”

In addition, Amazon does admit they share consumer information, however, they detail how and why this is done;
“Does Amazon.com Share the Information It Receives?”

“Information about our customers is an important part of our business, and we are not in the business of selling it to others. We share customer information only as described below and with subsidiaries Amazon.com, Inc. controls that either are subject to this Privacy Notice or follow practices at least as protective as those described in this Privacy Notice.”

This disclosure is helpful to the customer because if they see this statement beforehand, they can decide for themselves whether to proceed with a transaction or to move on to another website. The business is protected because they have made it clear to the customer what they can or will do with their information.

Revealing trade secrets or intellectual property is one area where B2B and B2C may differ. Unless a consumer has invented a product, secured a patent, and was taken advantage of by a business, then the statement that revealing or selling intellectual property or trade secrets will not apply. Violations occur when internal employees leak information out or sell it to a competitor. Employees in this day and age are usually required to sign a confidentiality agreement upon hire, yet there are many who are willing to take the risk of fine or imprisonment. Employers are ultimately responsible for determining whether an employee poses a risk factor. Employment Due Diligence is to ensure that prospective new hires are screened for suitability prior to hiring.

Ethical, legal, and regulatory issues are very similar on a B2C site compared to a B2B site. Either way, the business guilty of or even rumored to be in the practice of illegal or unethical transactions will lose their good name since word of mouth travels fast.
